 Writing for the web

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you can simply use the text from your printed brochures to create an effective website. It will almost certainly be too wordy.

How to write good website copy

There’s a technique to writing good copy for the web, and here are some tips:

  • Be as concise as possible. Write clear, simple, and punchy sentences and be ruthless about editing your copy down to a minimum
  • Group related content into paragraphs, and break up your page by a series of sub headings
  • Remember that there is a ‘safe area’ which is visible in all browsers. Put your most important points above this point, and if possible keep text short enough that scrolling is not necessary.
  • Include frequent links in your text to relevant pages - web users don’t read your site like a book, they like to pursue a thread of content and this can mean side stepping to another page.
